Capoeira is a dynamic Brazilian martial art form that embodies not only self defence techniques but also a combination of acrobatics, dance, music, song, sport, culture, art, Brazilian folklore and much more. An eclectic compilation of influences and physical requirements, Capoeira embodies poetry, entertainment, games, fun and a form of combat. It is a graceful movement dialogue that integrates control, strength and power with agility, rhythm and harmony.

Now an official National Sport of Brazil, Capoeira evolved through the dance and chants of African slaves bought to Brazil by the Spanish + Portuguese in the 1500’s. It developed into a combat method the enslaved could practise clandestinely.
As opposed to fighting-like other Martial Arts forms, Capoeira is about movement, where the two players are continually improvising offensive or defensive manoeuvres. “The play”, conducted within the confines of a circle between two participants, is almost dance like, with expressive stylised yet improvised movements. Partners react in a creative, yet dynamic manner to an infinite variety of movements, gestures, postures, balances, and movements culminating into balances. The defensive moves are not just used to escape an attack but are the beginning of a counter attack.
There is no play without music and the leading instrument is the musical bow of African heritage, the Berimbau. Its different rhythms determine the pace and type of game which is to be played.
Aerobically demanding, Capoeira develops mastery in all aspects of life and a feeling of dignity through physical fitness, mental awareness, humility, comradeship and fun. Capoeira helps develop aerobic and anaerobic fitness, flexibility, agility, balance, strength and power.
